The Power of Words

"Let me say everything on my mind" is a very common expression in today's world, and this expression has subtly been normalized even within Christian spaces. The unregenerated human feels the urge to say whatever they want to say regardless of what happens or how anyone feels afterwards. This should not be so among believers in Christ.
Words cannot literally be seen, but they have so much weight that can leave a lasting scar on the recipient. It is therefore wise to be careful with words.
Words helps us to communicate our feelings, grievances, intentions, and so on. However, the message passed must be presented in such a way that the recipients of our words are duly considered.
As believers, we have a duty to the fact that our communication should be with no offences intended or unintended, whether to a believer or an unbeliever.
Colossians 4:6
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
The above scriptures gives a prescription to us believers. One of the important words in that scripture is 'always'. This means that no matter the context or environment where our words are needed, we must ensure that it builds up and not tear others down.
Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Today, the social media has expanded the reach of our words, both written and spoken. This implies that our words can reach larger audience and imapct many lives, either positively or negatively.
Many have become victims of emotional trauma, backsliding, unforgiveness, guilt, hurt, revenge, depression or even suicide just because of what others said to them. To mention a few, body-shaming, bullying, false accusations, heavy criticism and scandals have the ability to destroy others' life, self-esteem, confidence, marriage and dreams.
If we find a wrong-doing especially among believers, we should not be quiet about it. However, we must speak with the wisdom that is from above, so that the people involved could be restored rather than destroyed.
Some words are better left unsaid than said. If they would destroy others, then it is better to leave them unsaid.
Here are a few tips;
• Avoid speaking when you are angry. Tackle every root of bitterness before responding to situations.
• Speak little, hear more.
James 1:19
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
• When you are hurt yourself, ask for help. Avoid passing aggression.
• Steer clear from all guile, fault-finding, gossip, abuse, hurtful words and all that do not edify.
• Ask the Holy Spirit for the wisdom to say the right words. James 1:5
Proverbs 13:3
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Dear believers, let your words be seasoned with grace!
